The first two-days workshop took place on the 3rd and the 4th of October 2016 at the Irish College in Leuven (Belgium).
The first part of the workshop aimed at introducing the sponsor and the project leaders. First, Albert Royo, the Secretary General of the Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia, explained why DIPLOCAT decided to sponsor the project. Then, the outline of the project was presented by the four project leaders, Jacint Jordana (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals), Micheal Keating (Centre on Constitutional Change) and Axel Marx and Jan Wouters (Leuven Center for Global Governance Studies).
The second part of the workshop aimed at discussing initial versions of the participants’ contributions. They addressed a number of relevant topics, from the nature of nationalism in Europe to the meaning of European borders and the legal constraints of independence. The discussion was interdisciplinary as participants include political scientists, political theorists, international lawyers and lawyers.
In the following sessions, some of the participants presented their first working drafts in person, while few were connected via skype. This workshop gave the participants the opportunity to meet each other and find out which guidelines were given by the project leaders. Besides that, every scholar was able to comment on the other scholars work and look for possible connections.
