Approach

The project has an interdisciplinary approach based on cross-fertilization of diverse fields of research. We bring together scholars from different continents and countries, which take a fresh look on the contemporary Europe. The involved scholars come from different disciplines like political philosophy, comparative politics, political economy, international relations or law and address the questions of borders, sovereignty and self-determination through new conceptualizations and approaches. The project has the form of a series of thematic papers and case studies. These will address:

    1. New understandings of nationhood and political community;

    2. New conceptualizations of statehood, sovereignty, borders and union;

    3. Differing visions of citizenship, its content and its boundaries;

    4. Normative issues around self-determination and solidarity;

    5. The European Union as a distinct form of political order;

    6. The external boundaries of Europe;

    7. Multilevel politics in Europe;

    8. Differentiation of status for states, territories and communities within the European Union and its neighbourhood.

The aim of the project is to contribute to the academic debate, by enriching the state of art. Therefore, the final articles will be published in an edited volume. The publisher of this volume is still to be established. With this innovative brainstorming, we hope also to contribute to the public debate on questions of borders, sovereignty and self-determination.
